My Story

Hey! My name is Manuel!  I am a 5-month-old Potcake* dog!  I am probably a Labrador/Hound mix.  I originate from Nassau, Bahamas.  I am part of the 127 dogs that took the exciting trip from The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas – Pawtcake Refuge (https://pawtcakerefuge.org) to the United States to start a new chapter in my life.  I will miss all the wonderful humans that cared and loved me while I was at the Refuge, and I am grateful for all their support.  I will also miss all my four-legged friends but am excited for this new chapter and all the new friends – human and animal- that I will make.

I am full of 5-month-old puppy energy and have been enjoying doing zoomies in the paddock.  I have tons of fun playing tug-a-war with my kennel mate Elton.  I do play well by myself, but I also enjoying just sitting next to the volunteers on our couch in the paddock.  I am still getting used to walking on a leash (I used to freeze up when I first had to walk with one when coming to E.A.R.S.).  Sometimes I still get nervous and will freeze up, but with the support of the volunteers, I am overcoming this nervousness.

While I am not 100% ready for adoption – the rescue is accepting applications on me for those willing to wait until I am ready to go to my new family.  With time and patience, I will make a great family pup.  My new family must understand that I will need time to adjust to another set of new surroundings.  I will need time, patients and understanding while I continue to work on my manners and skills.  I still get shy around new humans, but so long as they go slow, I am quick to warm up.  I play well with the other Potcake dogs, but we are unsure how I will be with other dogs in general and/or cats.  I will probably do well with kids so long as they understand they need to go slow and be patient.

My adoption fee is $300.00.

Potcake* dogs are mixed-breed street island dogs from the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.  These dogs are known as potcake dogs because the locals feed the caked remains, like rice, from cooking pots to these dogs.  Potcake dogs are known to be loving, loyal and smart.  They often express appreciation for the good fortune of being rescued, loved and cared for.
